Where is coaching used




















What is it and how can it help you? Workplace coaching is the process of equipping people with the tools, knowledge, and opportunities they need to fully develop themselves to be effective in their commitment to themselves, the company, and their work. An ego-less process in which coachable moments are created to draw out distinctions and promote shifts in thinking and behaviour.

Many organizations, researchers and leaders have identified coaching as a critical leadership and management competency. In addition, employees are asking more and more for coaching. True coaching improves employee and organizational resiliency and effectiveness in change. We define workplace coaching as the skills, processes and knowledge through which people involve themselves in making the maximum impact and constantly renewing themselves and their organizations as they experience continuous change.

Coaching is not management skills re-packaged, although coaching draws on certain management skills and competencies. Coaching deals with employee growth, development, and achievement by removing roadblocks to performance and enhancing creativity. Management deals with supervision, evaluation and meeting objectives.

Workplace Coaching is not therapy or counselling, although coaching uses some of the same communication processes. Coaching is about creativity, performance and action, while therapy deals with resolution and healing of the past. The essential part of coaching, then, is to help people to learn to silence that inner voice and allow their instincts, or their subconscious, to take over. One useful model for learning is the Competence Cycle, a four-stage model that can help you identify your competences:.

A good example would be a child who has never seen a bicycle, or has no idea that any language exists other than their own. An example might be the child who has seen other children riding bicycles, or heard someone speaking another language, and therefore wishes to learn. You have learned how to do something, but you still need to think about it in order to do it. An example would be the child who can ride a bicycle but falls off if they stop watching where they are going. You have learned how to something so well that it has become hard-wired into your brain.

You no longer have to think about how you do it, but just do it. In fact, if you think about it too hard, you may not be able to do it. Coaches need to identify the stage at which an individual is at to use the right sort of language to help them move to the next stage. Coaching involves the belief that the individual has the answers to their own problems within them. The coach is not a subject expert, but rather is focused on helping the individual to unlock their own potential.

The focus is very much on the individual and what is inside their head. Coaching engages participants with its unique one-on-one feedback and lots of encouragement. When an individual becomes engaged with their workplace, they can contribute more effectively to the team and the organization. This engagement also helps to increase retention rates and productivity, benefiting their careers as well as their overall organization.

The level of engagement individuals reach in their coaching relationships can be supported by coaching software. This software can further increase engagement by giving the organization a way to frequently check-in on the relationship and drive the progress. Having a coach gives the individual a safe space to go and talk through sensitive issues. The coach often is a third-party participant, and their ability to remain uninvolved but give guidance allows the coachee to gain perspective without feeling intimidated by someone within their own organization.

Whether in a classroom or through online learning, there will be a planned approach and a specific time frame used. While coaches will prepare before a session, the approach is much more fluid and revolves around the needs and wants of the coachee.

The coachee and the coach will work together to outline the content of each session, adjusting where needed. It is not up to the coach to tell the coachee what to do or how to solve their problems, instead they work with the coachee to guide them to their own solutions. It is helping them learn rather than teaching them.
